Ethical Kids Clothing and Accessories

Children's fashion can be quite a can of worms, leaving many parents confused and overwhelmed. But it doesn't have to be so confusing. There are a couple universal rules to keep in mind, but generally speaking, fashion for kids is never set in stone. As long as you're open to allowing your kid to try new things, you and they will inevitably find stuff that matches their unique personality.

Shopping Ethical Clothing Brands For Kids

One of the most important things to look for when shopping for your kid is high-quality material. This is even more true for those of you who live in areas that get extreme weather conditions. One of the best types of materials to look into are ethical, organic cotton clothes (this fabric is recommended for adults as well). The absence of various toxins in organic cotton clothes, which is too often present in other materials, prevents your child’s skin from exposure of your skin from negative additives. Not only is it good on the skin, but it’s also beneficial for the environment as well. Non-organic cottons happen to account for over 2.6% of overall water usage and contributes to global warming. Clothes made with sustainable fabrics can save 2,700 liters of water per shirt alone.

Along with style, it is also recommended to look into unique fashion trends within your child's demographic when shopping for ethical clothing brands. For both boys and girls, florals, flannels, and jean fabrics are hot these days. Gender neutral clothing is becoming much more popular and more encouraged for parents too. This enables you to focus more on fashion and/or comfort for your kids more so than outdated gender biases related to things like colors and prints traditionally associated with only boys or girls. Giving your child freedom to wear blue, pink, or the rainbow also allows for them to be more of an individual in a world that constantly tries to label people.

Lastly, sizing is especially important for kids. It’s actually not recommended that parents buy clothes too big for their child in the hopes of them growing into them. This causes them to wear clothes that are potentially uncomfortable, and when they finally fit the outfit properly, it may be worn out already. With online shopping, some stores do allow custom sizing for an added price. If not, make sure to look at the size charts and measure your kid accordingly to prevent buying things too big or too small.

In terms of accessories, it can be good to give your child the opportunity to choose what they please. Sure, it can be good to have adult supervision to an extent, to keep kids from wearing clothes that might be a bad fit for the weather, unsafe, or that you might find inappropriate for some reason. But it's still a good idea to provide kids creative freedom to an extent. Studies have shown that kids who have been more able to choose their own outfits as a form of self-expression have a much easier time adapting similar creativity in school. Fashion and style can also be a wonderful way for you to encourage kids to be an individual, be themselves, and continually discover who they are.

And with DoneGood, you can also know that all products here are made ethically and sustainably. We think it’s nice to know that the items you’re buying for your kids aren’t made using child labor, or other things you’d prefer your money does not support!
