The woman behind the bag (updated 2014/15):

We work with a workshop in New Delhi to construct and assemble the Indian collection, using market fabrics. The workshop we partnered with is woman-owned and was established in 1996 with the motive of reviving the dying arts of India and providing regular work to home workers. The workshop’s directors also
run and fund a girls' school that offers free tuition and midday meals. Lalita (pictured) has worked in the workshop for two years. She has five children: three girls, one of whom stays at home with her children, another works with her in the workshop, and a third is in school. One of her boys is in school and the other works in a garment manufacturing company.

About Catrinka

Catrinka is out to empower women and girls at every step. Their beautiful bags and accessories are ethically-made by women around the world who are receiving fair wages. These women use traditional artisan techniques from their cultures and utilize sustainable, locally-sourced materials to further lift up their local economies. A portion of proceeds is then invested in education and mentoring for adolescent girls in the places where the products are made. To date, Catrinka has provided 55,00 days of education for girls and more than 2,500 days of fair work for women in 16 countries!
