Water:Organic cotton uses only about 10% of the water of conventional cotton due to sustainable farming practices. Most organic cotton is also rainfall reliant and does not tap into reservoirs. With conventional cotton, farmers need to dilute pesticide-laden water many times over just to release it back into the waterways.
Organic cotton's energy consumption is 40% lower than conventional cotton as no energy is required to manufacture chemical pesticides and fertilizers since only organic manure is used. The majority of organic cotton is also grown using rainwater, reducing the need for pumping irrigated water from the ground or rivers.
Organic Cotton is grown without pesticides and fertilizers, producing up to 94% less greenhouse gas than conventional cotton. Sustainable farming techniques also produce soil that successfully removes CO2 from the atmosphere. Most Organic Cotton is farmed small-scale by hand, avoiding machinery and irrigation that generates emissions from fossil fuel use.
